Quebec Health Minister Christian Dubé announced Tuesday that due to concerns over staffing as the Omicron COVID-19 variant surges in the province, a change was being made to allow health-care and essential workers to be able to work even if they tested positive. He said decisions on who can work will be made on a case-by-case basis.
The health minister said that about 7,000 health-care workers were absent due to COVID-19 and that number could jump to 10,000 in the coming days and those staffing issues could further strain the health-care system. The province saw hospitalizations top 702, with 115 in intensive care units.
The province’s health ministry later in a press release provided clarification that the isolation period for health workers who test positive could be shortened depending on the type of exposure, results of lab tests and the person’s vaccination status.
Dubé also announced boosters would begin rolling out progressively to those age 18 and older starting Jan. 4, 2022.
