Health Canada’s chief medical advisor spoke Thursday regarding the agency’s approval of Covifenz, a COVID-19 vaccine developed by Quebec-based company Medicago.
The home-grown vaccine marks the world’s first ever plant-based jab authorized for human use and is also the first Canadian shot to be approved in over 20 years.
The vaccine offered more than 70 per cent protection against variants – including Delta – in a large-scale study and preliminary data suggests it also produces neutralizing antibodies against the Omicron variant.
It is the sixth shot against COVID-19 approved for use in Canada.
