Health Canada approves Pfizer’s bivalent COVID-19 vaccine booster shot | FULL

Health Canada chief medical advisor Dr. Supriya Sharma discussed on Friday the agency’s approval of Pfizer’s bivalent COVID-19 vaccine booster for people 12 years of age and older.

The newly-approved vaccine targets the original SARS-CoV-2 virus as well as Omicron’s BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants, and thus has the name “bivalent vaccine.”

The shot has been approved for Canadians ages 12 and older, and can be given at least three to six months following either the required two doses for full vaccination, or a booster shot. It is to be administered in a 30 microgram dose.

This is the second bivalent COVID-19 vaccine to be authorized by Health Canada. On September 2nd, the agency authorized Moderna’s bivalent booster for people 18 years of age and older.
