Canada’s top doctor provided an update on Thursday on the numbers of COVID-19 infections across the country, showing increased growth in Omicron variants activity amongst other respiratory diseases.
When asked whether people should wear masks indoors again, Dr. Theresa Tam said masks are recommended as an extra layer of protection against spreading infection, but it’s up to provinces to impose mandates.
Dr. Tam said the relaxing of COVID-19 measures, as well as the return to in-person learning and in-office work, increased people’s contacts, and thus increased the possibility of contracting diseases.
Public Health data shows the flu virus, RSV, and COVID-19 have seen activities beyond seasonal levels, putting a strain on an already stretched healthcare system.
