One thing that has become abundantly clear over the course of my career, is the importance of stress management. In terms of health, both physical and mental, managing stress is an obviously critical practice. However, many people fail to recognize how this impacts our ability to improve our fitness and aesthetics. Our gains in the gym are tied to our body’s ability to adapt, and if our stress exceeds our adaptive capacity, we will have fewer resources available to perform well with our training, recover from the training stress, and make adaptions that make us stronger, leaner, and more vital as humans. While there are many facets of stress management, deep breathing is perhaps the simplest, the most accessible, and the quickest way to get stress under control. With practice, we can utilize it to improve our sleep, improve our psychology, improve our focus, and better manage life stress, putting us in a better position, not only to make better gains, but also be healthier and more capable people in general.
